The Earth has 8 billion people. All trying to survive. In many parts of the world buying wild meat is the only protein source. Buying it live ensures it is fresh and you actually know what it is.In the Bronx I encountered 3 kinds of meat markets.American, where the meat is butchered and wrapped in nice plastic.Southern European, where the animal is killed, eviscerated but otherwise intact so you could know what it was.Caribbean/African where the animals are stored alive and butchered after purchase. Chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, cows.
