I find weeds are easy to grow and just as a Green as grass

I think lawns are a waste. Grow veggies. Plant fruit trees. At least grow clover for the bees.

But Grass is just weeds called Grass ;-)

That’s the difference in a lawn and a yard. ( I have a yard!)

We never watered our yard when I was growing up, so during drier spells, I’d use a weedwhip on the fast growing plants; anything to avoid using the Sears Silent Mower. That thing was a pain to push.

Then there are the “Get off my lawn, kid,” pluggers who keep a meticulously maintained lawn that are perfect to play on. I mean what other reason is there to have a lawn?

That is exactly how we manage dandelions.

Our neighborhood has a family that did the “No mow may” thing for the bees, but they don’t seem to realize it’s almost July. Some areas are almost waist high by now. The neighbor ladies are incensed, but I don’t think the neighbor men care.

I follow a rule written by my former Physics teacher: if it’s green, mow it.

Eh me no has no lawns.

The truth is even stranger. Mowing a field regularly gives preference to shorter, sideways-growing grasses. It’s a form of short-term environmental modification. However, “regularly” is more often than most people would like to do it. :)

Well, it IS green, afterall…

I drove by my old house yesterday. I think they decided to grow grass seed as a crop. It was at least a foot high. When I sold it, the lawn was beautiful. I had installed a sprinkler system. Before that, it had lots of dead spots. In my youth, we mowed whatever was there, and didn’t care what it was.

When I was just a kid (many, many, many years ago) my Mother sent me out to pull weeds around her flowers ….. well I figured that if something was growing and it wasn’t a bush or had flowers …. it was a weed …… did what I thought was a great job ….. Mother came out and had a fit …. about half were flowers ……. on the bright side ….. she “NEVER” asked me to pull weed again …… :)

If it is green, it is a lawn.

If you mow regularly, the short-bladed grasses will thrive, and displace the other vegetation.

I love the little yellow native wildflowers that grow the fascinating balls of seeds that fly away, and in my back yard I have a miniature nature preserve where everything is allowed to grow naturally!

After husband quit his job about 15 years ago, our gardener (grass cutting guy) disappeared. So husband started cutting our grass. Most of the front of the house is our driveway and our property is less than 60 x100 so not that much, especially since part of the back is paved as a patio. It would take both of us to deal it as he would get exhausted and I had to help. Then he bought an electric mower figuring it would lighter in weight and easier for him to use – I had walk along side him and hold the electric cord in the air so he did not mow over it.

Then came Covid. In 2020 we did not go into the backyard until he needed something from our garage at the end of summer. It was over knee high. I suggested we leave it die during the winter and deal with in the spring of 2021. He agreed. 2021 – forgot about it again. Last year we hired a gardener to cut the grass for us.

Never have to worry about it again – well worth the expense. We were actually able to go and replace the broken basement window well cover that we found about the hard way when the hurricane hit and the basement got wet around that window.
