I think it was the carbon fiber that went south; i.e. carbon fiber vests have a shelf life of 5 years and if it stopped a projectile then dispose of it, so after so many deep sea dives the Titan was compromised. Another thing, scuba tanks can be made with carbon fiber, it can withstand tremendous pressures from internal forces, external forces on carbon fiber is largely unknown and the pressure from that depth is probably 10,000 pounds per square inch according to some sources.
It is interesting to look at the information display on the seat ahead and see that the plane is below sea level. You can do that Schiphol Airport in The Netherlands.
