I had a cat who loved to hunt but we lived in a nearly rodent-free neighborhood. She had to practice catch-and-release to stay in practice – a very smart cat.
I am trying to decide what my trained hunter beagle would do if we ran across a dead squirrel. She ignores live ones, which I assume she was taught by the 3 hunters who had her before I did. But something dead – she might eat it. Whole. She might sniff it, or even ignore a dead one. I hope I never have to find out. I know how she reacts to dead mice and birds and sharp bones outside and it’s lucky I have good reflexes. She’s totally a bottom feeder.

Don’t disparage his efforts; it does nothing to help his self esteem.

Eeeyuck! But it was a good laugh. Thanks!
PS: Of course it counts, but only the first time. From now on, only the live ones count!
