As bad as having a Lucy on your team is, imagine have 11 Lucy’s on your team. I coached an U12 soccer team of various levels of ability boys who played another team of pretty much all beginners. By halftime we were already beating them 7 nil. The problem was, the other team, just like Lucy, stood still, protecting their position, and letting my guys run around them and score repeatedly in their goal. In the 2nd half, i moved the forwards to the back field and put the backs on the attacking line, and we scored another 8 goals. I felt so sorry for the other team who just didn’t know any better. After the game, I did a training session for the coaches and players of this team so they’d know what to do: yes, protect your position but relative to the ball’s position,. When we met them a second time, later in the season, they were a vastly different team, but we still won.
