In all fairness, they are both a bit in the wrong. True, he should stop calling her a name she finds annoying and try another approach; it’s not working anyway. As a matter of fact, it’s backfiring. Persistence can be good but he’s being dense along with it. He should try to explain to Marcie that he is sincere and not sarcastic—that he really does think she is cute and wants to get to know her. Patty is right that he seems like a nice kid aside from his slow learning curve that he needs a different approach. Marcie too is being stubborn in a bad way. She seems unable to accept that he might really like her. Instead of hitting him etc, she should tell him directly that if he really likes her, he can prove it by not calling her lambcake and then start over and give him a chance. Then if she still doesn’t like him, she should let him down easy.
Back in the day (1950s-1960s) this would probably have been considered “cute and clueless”. Now we see them as adults and potential stalkers. Unrequited love is frequent on Peanuts. Lucy/Schroeder, Sally/Linus, Peppermint Patty herself and Charlie Brown, not to mention Charlie Brown and the Little Red-Haired Girl. It doesn’t need to be confused with adult behaviors: they’re little kids.

Maybe he should try a different pet name. “Lambcake” doesn’t seem to be having the desired effect.

Since they don’t really know each other, calling her anything other than her name is an insult.
