That guy in panel 4 who looks dressed like Andy Griffith in the show Mayberry RFD is really supposed to be Red Green a hillbilly like dude TV show from Ontario, Canada. Supposedly a neighbor of the Pattersons.

Ah yes, the early promos for the Revenge of the Nerds movie, the going to college scene. Micheal does have the Robert Carradine kind of look on his face.

Paul Harvey had a story about a couple who drove for hours to drop their daughter – the last to leave the next – at her new college. On the way back the mother was feeling the Empty Nest syndrome. A little bit down the road the father pointed out a nice looking Bed and Breakfast and asked her if she wanted to stop there for the night. Empty Nest syndrome gone just that fast, replaced by Freedom!

Hard for a parent to see a child off to college. I remember when my parents first took me. They thought we’d take my stuff to my dorm room; then we’d have a relaxing meal together before they left. They at least got the first part right. But the college knew it’s stuff. Once the kids’ stuff was unloaded, there were parking lot monitors that shooed parents away; and even gave them directions to the campus exit. It was never going to be the sort of sentimental parting that I’ll bet many parents envisioned.

We all know Fathers live vicariously through their sons. That applies to going off to college, too…

My brother in law decided he needed to embarrass me when he helped me move to the dorms. He wore an earflap hat. It was August. He cracked himself up.

So John contracted April’s illness, which he passes on to Michael. Then Michael goes to the campus. Soon the entire school is infected with the April disease.
