When I adopted my dog at age 6, we got along like we had grown up together. I was so happy to have found such a sweet, easy dog. First thing in the morning, 6a, I woke up to a growling sound. Uh, oh. Then I saw her standing on my bed, looking in a mirror. I talked to her, she got over it, and went back to sleep. It only happened once more ever – she saw her reflection in the glass over my fireplace. I wonder if she never had seen either a mirror or a reflection of herself anywhere before?
Our dog never had any reaction whatsoever to seeing her reflection in the mirror. We figured that, unlike Buckles, she was either smart enough to recognize herself, or she simply didn’t care that there was “another dog” standing there, in HER house, looking back at her. Either way, it was nice not having to deal with an annoying issue like this one! ;-)
I’ve been told that cats only notice themselves in a mirror if the mirror is on the floor…I did have a cat that was constantly trying to get behind the floor mirror to catch that other cat. Now I have a little guy that seems to notice himself no matter where the mirror is.

Forget it, Jill, it’s no use trying to explain it to Buckles.

Makes about as much sense as my behavior some days. Sigh.

Kneel next to him so he can see all 4 of you at the same time. It will probably make him whimper!
