    /// In a fast-moving stream, Canoe Lookout,

shows two men racing down to a cookout.

Guy in back does the rowing,

(since he looks where they’re going).

Man in front grasps a rifle he took out.

/// Toward the right shore he peers for a sight

of some enemies eager to fight.

    Are there Indians there?

    See the rowing man’s hair—

straight black braids, he’s a native all right.

    Canoe Lookout

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Canoeing in art" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ecosia and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found and once there find the text string Walter, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting by Walter Whitehead (note his monogram, 2 W’s that some might say looks like a predatory animal’s paw, between the 19 and 23, denoting the 1923 date, at the lower right ).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3155 (June 27, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger, if you trim what’s after .png from the URL). I have added a comment there pointing to the info I found about this artist I used to point to here (funny, that was approved while the attribution remained Anonymous). So far, first work by him used here.

The thrill of the birchbark canoe/

is reserved for the privileged few/

    with Alaskan retreats/

    for judicial elites../

I don’t have friends like those, do you?///

    The peril of untaxed wealth/

is the way it empowers by stealth/

    Inequality’s birth/

    (not of values, but worth)/

    And subverts our political health.///

We succumb to the wealthy elites/

    Who can buy Senatorial seats/

    It’s a human disaster/

    We can’t seem to master/

And the darned thing repeats and repeats…///

    I regret that I just couldn’t hew/

To the theme of the speeding canoe/

    But it really does seem/

    That we’re heading downstream/

    As all nations eventually do…///
