That whole passage in the Bible, charming as it may be, is spurious. The inclusion of John 7:53—8:11, the pericope adulterae, is not supported by the best manuscript evidence. In the story in the Bible, they say that they caught her in the act of adultery. So where’s the guy she was doing it with? How come she’s the only one they were going to punish?

If you look in the margin of modern translations, you’ll see a footnote that this whole section is not in the original manuscripts. Therefore, it is not Scripture.

I have literally never heard that expression outside the Bible itself. “Judge not, lest you be judged” is more well-known, I think.

The Pharisees were hypocrites. The Mosaic Law they touted said the man AND the woman committing adultery were guilty and deserved death, but they only brought the woman who was “caught,” meaning they let the man go. Jesus addressed their self-righteousness by indirectly pointing out that if they wanted to apply the law without mercy, they would also be in trouble. Then, Jesus forgave the women, which he had authority to do, but told her to “go and sin no more” (he wasn’t just saying, “Oh, it’s all right…”)

And while it’s try that this passage is not found in some older manuscripts, it in no way contradicts any others, and the spirit of what is taught here is found in many other passages.
