Wallace wouldn’t be the first to wonder about that—I’ve seen the idea batted around a few times before in various new age mermaid media. Though part of it is spurred by people just wanting to put a darker twist on the mythology for them.
Classically mermaids sang to sailors to lure them into the sea to drown – they were not nice creatures! So Wallace is not far from the classic mermaid functionwise, really, differing mostly in appearance.
Here’s an idea for a history arc: one of Wallace’s friends has an extended dream (or nightmare?) about being in Hogwarts (without mentioning Hogwarts or any of the Harry Potter’s characters; we don’t want to p. off Ms. Rowling.)
I disagree with Wallace—most deep-dwellers would prefer to be left alone—but Panel 1 is hilarious all by itself—the way Wallace brings something up out of the blue.
I’d like to have my toes in the shallows of the Atlantic right now.

I guess I should rebrand to mermaid then because I’ve been doing that for five years now

Why don’t you get your Mom’s opinion on that?

Well, since Japanese mythology says that eating mermaid flesh makes you immortal, I’d say that turnabout is fairplay.

I like Spud’s reply, “That makes one of us.” We don’t know what seagull thinks of mermaids or if seagull ever thinks of mermaids.

Why does Spud go into the ocean? Because it’s there!!

The mermaids’ escas are a fantastic touch!

I wonder if Spud took off the water wings, if he would have an even paler ring on his arm?

Mermaids like that would never lure any sailor to anything . .

Well, at least he doesn’t have racist opinions on why mermaids can’t be black. . . .

If that’s Wallace’s tanned skin tone, his untanned skin must reflect blinding light.

I love Spud’s snarky reply in the 1st panel.

Not the ‘Siren Song of the Deep’ type of Mermaid of lore.

2nd panel is beyond hilarious! They’re each thinking of Spud! You have a creative imagination, Mr. Henry!

The seagull gets more face time than Amelia and Rose combined. Maybe more facetime than Spud?

Spud goes into the ocean because only a few sharks can get in shallow enough water to be a danger to him.

Inflation valve on the water wings – nice attention to detail Mr. Henry!
