Actually, manned flight WAS attempted in the Middle Ages – an 11th century monk named Elmer of Malmesbury built a pair of wings and flew 220 yards before he crashed into a field and broke his legs. He intended to add a tail to his device and almost made the first primitive plane, but he was forbidden from going any further by his superiors, and manned flight was sadly put on hold for 800 years.
