It is also why he doesn’t lead from the front.

The apex predator has been kept healthy. Still a good deed, Hawthorne.

I must admit that I didn’t trust Hawthorne to actually do a good deed.

Reminds me of the time I attended a Buddhist ceremony where they purchased a large quantity of tiny fish from a pet store, and were going to set them free in a large lake. When they dumped the tiny fish into the lake, the large fish in the lake promptly ate the tiny fish. The Buddhists seemed happy, though.

Krill is the main food source for some whales.

“Krill is the near-exclusive food for giant blue whales, and seabirds like auklets and shearwaters. Commercially valuable salmon, rockfish, flatfish, sardines and squid thrive on krill. When abundant, animals migrate thousands of miles to feed on krill. But when absent, the entire marine ecosystem suffers.” An optimistic krill is one who expects to live a long and happy life.

Hawthorn did a good deed for the whale. Since he didn’t plan it, he doesn’t appreciate it and hates the failure of his plan instead. He likes being a crabby little crab.

Look at the bright side, Hawthorne, at least the whales are happy that the krill have been brought back.

Years later the whale defends Hawthorne from a bully. “Remember me?” he says, “I was hungry and you gave me all those krill?”

Some escaped by luck or skill. Good traits to pass on to the progeny.
