Old code required a ground wire to the water lines. A lightning strike would hit everything on the way through the house. New code states that power, phone, and cable should be grounded to a ground stake before entering the house.
My whole neighborhood is up in arms since AT&T decided to rip up the old cables and replace them with fiber, except for me, since I’ve been happily wireless for over 25 years with Verizon.
The only time I ever had anything “fried” by a lightning strike, it was a Night-Light plugged into an outlet, and the “forked” Cable connector to an Analog TV (You could say “the fork got forked”… but you probably wouldn’t). Goes to show you that electricity can do some odd things…
Awe, no cable for the family. Time to go on a road trip? I use the library for wifi when the power goes out which isn’t often since my home is on the same grid as a convalescent home

Typical.

The surge that cooked that bit of coax could well have reached all their “devices” too.

Yeah, the internet provider will send out a technician in about 2 weeks.

I have an emergency hot spot device that is 4G. Works well enough when my cable internet goes down or I lose power.

Today, my building lost power around 10:00am.
Almost immediately, my next door neighbours CO2 detector started beeping…
As I loaded my phones web browser, to check Toronto Hydro’s website for details, boom! Power came back on.
