I have a friend who is a librarian. You wouldn’t believe how threatening and vulgar the people who want to ban books can be, per his experience. There is nothing civil, thoughtful, or logical about their behavior or reasoning. Plus the fact they haven’t read the books they want to ban. he says that intimidation is their primary strategy. One of his colleagues had enough and countered that the bible should be banned because of the sex and violence in it. That apparently shut up one fascist.
Ain’t it strange that the people who claim that ensuring that school libraries are age appropriate is “book banning” but forcing editors to stop publishing certain books and edit out “offensive parts” is not book banning.
Protecting children from age-inappropriate books is not dumb. There’s a reason that video stores used to have a restricted little room out the back for people who wanted “adult” content.
Some books now promote adult content to those too young to understand.
There was not a drive to ban books until the GQP determined they didn’t have any real proposals on their platform. This is similar when the Tea baggers would go to Democrat politician’s meetings shouting “Keep the government out of my medicare.”
It’s a distraction so the public won’t demand to make the rich and corps pay their fair share in taxes.
The Bible has been banned countless times because it ended up falling under the category of ‘not for children because I don’t want literature to contain X’
