It may seem hopeless for the kid, but just keep modeling that healthy behavior. The one thing I know about kids is, they are always always always watching what you (the parent) are doing. They won’t let you know, but they’re watching. And learning.
I was on a whale watch recently, and we had two humpback whales cruising right next to the boat for about 10 minutes – very impressive. I went into the cabin to get a new battery for my camera, and there were 3 kids sitting there staring at their cell phones. Oy!
The idea here is that the more things you have the ability to perceive and enjoy in life, the happier you are, Not being able to enjoy nature is a deficiency.

The kid thinks: another booooring, endless walk with the parents… Like I did as a kid. Now I would love to be able to go hiking again ;-)

In this hot summer, I’m worried that they’re not carrying water bottles and a dish for the dog.

Everyone seems happy. It’s a good thing. I’d love be able to enjoy a peaceful hike. The heat is just too much for me.

In the REAL world, the adults would also be staring at their phones. The human addiction to phones has gone from ridiculous to sublime.
