I asked the pharmacist one time what the difference was between the medication the doctor prescribed for me and the one I could get off the shelf. She said “about $40”. I’ve been getting it off the shelf ever since.
I don’t know the system used in the USA, I live in Germany. But for Ibuprofen you don’t need a prescription, and you pay about 3 to 5 €. If you have a doctors prescription, you pay only a part of the real costs, most is payed by the health insurance.
