Threat identification

I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen a porcupine except in pictures, although we apparently do have them in New England. But some encounters are more memorable than others.

My aunt’s German Shepherd had that lesson twice, once when he killed the porcupine and again when he dug it up to, I assume, kill it again.

There’s a world of difference there.

The colorist missed one of the Band-aids.

My daughter-in-law’s family had a Rottweiler named Augie. He was a very sweet dog but was short on brains. He got a face full of quills not once, not twice, but three times in the span of a few months before he learned to leave the porcupine alone!

Dogs have little judgement in such matters. I had to have our dog trained to avoid rattlesnakes. Interesting process, using a snake with the current fangs removed (the back-ups drop down in a day or two). He doesn’t exactly “alert” on rattlesnakes, but if you’re walking with him and he makes a sharp turn off the path, there’s a snake ahead, and you’d better pay attention to him. But it’s only the snakes he’s trained on.

Even if he is not a particularly bright dog, I’m sure he already got the point.

My neighbor’s dog recently got “skunked”. He thought it would be a good idea to come charging up and trap it in a corner outside my door. I had to use the back door for a couple of days.

God, this one is hilarious. Glad I wasn’t drinking something when I first saw it.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. He will never learn. With people, age is not a factor.

My dog recently killed a porcupine and, of course, ended up with a face full of quills. I don’t actually believe he’s learned his lesson.

Is this the same dog that was learning to use a fork a few days back?

It will never work. Dogs seemingly are hard-wired with a “he pulled a knife on me but ILL GET HM NEXT TIME!!” scenario.
