Honestly Adam, every writer does it differently – he should know that by now! Some write like Laura: have a character and off they go, write loads and often edit heavily at the end; work out every detail of plot beforehand and write slowly (like one page a day).
There are things going on in her head that Adam could not possibly imagine. His is too full of coffee flavors, coffee history and when he should take his next siesta.
Once you’re inside a character’s head, for me, the dialogue flows. And, like Jane Austen, I like to present discovery/reveal through dialogue. And, also like Austen, I’m criticized for writing too many talking heads and not enough action. I take it as a compliment.
Sure, write the story then work out the details. Let someone else read it, then edit it and submit. I hear some politicians don’t even bother with the edit. Just write and publish. Let the details work themselves out in the media.

More sulky than surly.

I’ve had a book in my head for decades, never written anything down
I’ve got a bunch of semi developed characters and some good actions scenes, but a very thin plot
Should make a great blockbuster summer movie

But is the unicorn of writers who just has an idea pop into their mind and writes it effortlessly with nary a typo — which apparently describes Laura.

That is how I write! A two or three sentence outline, and then just write!

Supposedly Mark Twain, when asked about how to write, replied: “Write what you know.” Adam knows coffee, perhaps there is a book in that?
