Give it another couple of decades and even Dan will start reaching for words that are suddenly no longer immediately accessible. MIL used the always handy “thingamajig” and I find myself saying stuff like “that thing that loosens jar lids”. So I figure if I at least remember the function of the “thingy”, I’m still mostly functioning too.

Just pick any word that’s handy. Hm——is this like drawing? Let’s say I want to draw a bench, but I draw a chair instead . . after all, you know what I meant, right?

A rook makes Dan itchy? Is he allergic to crows or something?

I use Crisco on a baking pizza pan, spread the dough and it browns beautifully Old trick taught to me by my grandma! ☺️

Amanda, what part of the country are you in? (In Latin America and Spain, we call the knight “the horse” and the rook “the tower”.) And I hear that in Minnesota, a “water fountain” is a “bubbler”? And who uses “antigogglin” for “crooked”?

In my house, the TV remote is referred to as the schmichik (no idea how to spell that in English). It’s a Yiddish word that equates to “thingamabob” or “gadget”.

As I live alone except with my cats (yes, I’m one of those crazy cat ladies…) I only need to say the words in my head, which turn into pictures of the object I need. The result has been some surprising items that were never before used for that purpose, but so far I’ve survived.

Couples tend to have their own language. Then, you forget and speak it in front of others and they think you’ve gone mad. Good times!
