Oh Arlo. You were on a roll. Janis had The Look Of Love. But you just rolled one time too many. Don’t ask me how you misspoke. One of those things you just know.
Seems Arlo likes daydreaming and talk out loud about things more than actually doing the work for them. See the boat as an example. And his suggestion of moving when they first arrived, and several times on prior visits.
Now, Janis is definitely considering moving, and he walks back his earlier comments.
Maybe they’ll go house hunting before they leave, or the kids or Gus have a plan to help them resettle.
Husband on and off (for years) brings up moving to an area where we go on trips (several times a year before Covid, only twice since). I um hum him and then discuss what we will need to do to do so and how much stuff (and almost all our stuff is his) we will need to get rid of or figure out what to do with it – such as his wood workshop in the garage, his leather and general workshops in the basement, our general craft studio in what was intended as a family room off the kitchen, his clothing (separate wardrobes for hot and cold weather), all of our books (10 or so 6 ft bookcases, 3 half height bookcases, and books stacked around ) – most books would have to go with us as I am not giving up my Louisa May Alcott collection and I know he will not give up his James Bond collection and so on.
Plus all of our siblings and their families are here – as is my 94yo mom. Since we have no children one or another of our niblings will end up being our caretaker (currently figure it will be his younger niece) – and probable heir as we have not been fortunate enough to have any children.
He thinks about it and says that “he will think about it”.

May be in trouble? You should never talk without thinking it over first!

What Arlo said: Maybe all we needed was a little vacation.
What Janis heard: Our marriage was on the rocks, I was miserable, and the joy had gone out of your eyes.

May be? Saying something should have been your first clue.

It seems necessary for him to walk on eggshells a lot.

Oh, yeah, BIG trouble.

It’s easy to get in a rut…..same basic thing day after day. Vacations are good for shaking things up a bit. Arlo’s fine.

It’s hard to take vacations when one is retired.

I still don’t get it. The Love of my Life sees any vacation as a wonderful thing.

You usually are if you ever try to talk. Or at least such has been my personal observation.

Arlo and Janis are by themselves every single day!! Why would they need quality time to themselves?

Either he is in trouble, or [grimly] he’s going to be.

They were in a rut, but Arlo should have never verbalized it.
