As if the gray hair, bath robe and fuzzy slippers weren’t a dead giveaway.

Ummm…holding an umbrella over the kid? Unless grandma is the Wicked Witch of the West, the child will not melt. In kindergarten we stood outside in the rain, wearing hats and foul weather gear, just like anything else. I believe the concept was to help make you self reliant rather than entitled and needy.

If you look closely at its headlights, even the bus seems to be rolling its eyes at the lack of a joke (or much of anything else) in today’s strip. I appreciate that attention to detail from the B-A-D (Batiuk-Ayers-Davis) creative team.

Looks like Ed will have to work twice as hard this year. He now has to drive two kids to and from school.

But what about Granny being introduced here? Is this a new love interest? Will we have a love triangle? A ménage a trois?

If all the mothers drive, why is there bus service?

If “all the other mothers” on Ed’s route, drive their kids to school ,how is it that he still has a route?

It was not a joke. He was basically saying that only a grandmother would stand in the rain with her grandchild. Parents wouldn’t. It is called wry humor. Not all jokes are side-splitting. Give it a break. Lighten up a little.

Perhaps you have to be sort of a Crankshaft to catch the subtle irony that creates the humor. Not every cartoon frame needs to be a belly laugh. For many of us, this strip is reminiscent of a world we knew long ago and faraway – and miss.

“All the mothers?” Okay, what about the fathers? My nephew has no problem driving his daughters to school.

Mr. Crankshaft is such a nice man. Perhaps after he drops his passenger off at school he can go out and impede drivers by purposely slow driving in front of them.

So, 4 days of all that talk, he leaves without her. Must have done the same to the girl’s mom years ago.
