It’s a sense of “Belonging”, a way to be competitive without actually competing, of living vicariously, or just being entertained by talented people doing something difficult…
I always thought that high school sports were the purest, as they only had members from their towns, but here in CA we have private schools that recruit players like the colleges do.
I felt very blessed by moving to the SF Bay Area. Two MLB teams, two NFL teams, and one NBA team. I was surprised that no one cared about Cal or Stanford. In Nebraska, the state shut down on Saturdays when the University of Nebraska was playing football.
“Loyalty” to a pro football team of any description is a profound mystery to me. Something must have been left out of my DNA. I guess that sort of thing has been around for a long time, “team spirit” over chariot racing “colors” in ancient Rome could lead to serious riots.

They may not be from here but a lot of them make this their home and do good things for our city here in Detroit.

I live about 60 miles north of Denver
The best way I can support the Broncos is to not watch them play, they always lose when I watch
I’m OK with that, not a football fan

I will always glare at a supporter of South Sydney due to the Great Betrayal of of 1909, long before I was born.
