Rooks at the ends. Knights in one from rooks. Bishops in one from knights. Queen to her own color with king beside her. Pawns filling the second row.
Rook vertically or horizontally.
Bishop diagonally
Queen vertically or horizontally or diagonally
King vertically or horizontally or diagonally but only one space.
Knight two vertically or horizontally then one horizontally or vertically without regard to anything in the intervening spaces
Pawn vertically two or one first move then one per move except when taking opponent the move is one step diagonally. Can become anything but king when reaching the far end of the board.
I’ll let someone else describe castling and associated rules.
Check is when King can be taken unless King moves, attacker is taken or the path is blocked.
Checkmate is when King is under attack and there is no way to get free
I’ll also let someone else discuss en passant and anything else I left out or got wrong.
20 initial possible moves and responding moves. Then it rises rapidly, depending on what went before.
