There may be a goof that only female artists could explain.
In the first two panels, John looks like he is undressing from his business suit and putting on casual clothes for the house. Yet most men would always remove their business shoes before removing the dress slacks so as not to smudge the slacks. Yet here John appears to remove his shoes the very last! I would never have even gotten into the bedroom with the dress shoes still on at my house!
Since Lynn Johnston likes puns, why not have Elly go into business for herself, a la Blondie? She could sell cold cuts and there could be a rotating sign:
Don’t take it too hard, Elly. If the interviewer treats employees and paying customers they way he did to you, his place will soon go bankrupt. Which means that receptionist will be unemployed. It is going to be hard for that gum-cracking airhead to get hired in a place that has an ounce of professionalism.
We may not like the “joke”, but John is right. He is probably the best thing that ever happened to Elly. Most importantly, he’s loving & supportive of her and her ambitions. He cares deeply about his wife and children. He’s providing a good living and a nice house (long before Elly ever got a job outside of the home). There’s not a whole lot to complain about unless it’s his sense of humor.

John is acting like the jerk he was when this strip began. Has his former “friend” Ted come back into his life??

He hasn’t been a bad husband all things considered. He makes a good living. But he does tend to put his foot in his mouth sometimes.
