You can make jokes and still be serious. A good book, a strip can be readand appreciated on several levels.

The joke’s on you, unless the joke is you.

I’ve gotten to prefer “arcs/storylines”. Makes you want to tune-in to the next episode. The one-liner or finite strip (in my opinion), is 75% of the time, not really humorous. (Flashback to early 1960s – I remember my Dad reading things like Dondi and Dick Tracy).

There’s plenty of “funny” in comedy, though much less of it after Molly Ivins died.
