This is so bogus. You can hum anything you want as long as it doesn’t disrupt the class. It’s the same old “they’re ruining the schools with PC” meme. Kids can pray whenever they want in school – there are even prayer groups because they’re student run groups. These things just can’t be school run. Geez – get over it.
The Politically Correct movement is neutering everything in public schools – not just religion. Religion (actually, just Christianity) is the major and most easily-seen target, but any display of what makes a person or a group different is being eliminated. Oh, and the comment about to whom people are praying? Please don’t try to understand that it truly is God (capital “G”) to whom I pray. You clearly don’t / can’t / won’t understand. That’s OK. But also don’t dare minimize or cheapen it with your interpretation. If you don’t understand it, either ask or keep quiet. Your interpretation indicates that I am praying to you – the unbeliever. Never going to happen. Ever.
To Allison Barrows: Thank you for trying to represent what is actually happening in our schools and our society in a humorous way. It’s that pink elephant in the room that people don’t want to acknowledge. This is a good and balanced way to encourage discussion.
About 30 years ago, Senator Don Nickles (R-OK) was asked if he would be in favor of a law that made it mandatory for every child in America to begin each school day with a prayer praising Jesus Christ. He said absolutely, because that was the ultimate goal of the school prayer movement. While I admire his honesty, it does show how little right-wingers actually care about freedom of religion.

The poem “Joy to the World” (Isaac Watts, first published in 1719) was set to a tune commonly called “Antioch” by Lowell Mason in 1839.
