It seems to me that the early Peanuts strips from this period are at least as remote from reality as those in which Snoopy imagines himself to be a World War I flying ace, except that they’re not funny, in fact not interesting in any way except for the mystery of why the strip wasn’t canceled. Thank goodness the syndicate held on until Schulz finally allowed his genius to flower!
