[Basil has accidentally set off the burglar alarm during the fire drill, guests start walking out of the building thinking it’s the fire alarm, but Basil stops them all in the lobby]

Mrs. Wilson : Oh, I thought there was a drill.

Basil Fawlty : Yes, there is, at twelve o’clock, but not yet.

My brother the teacher said that his main task during fire drills was to make sure the students weren’t doing anything “extracurricular” in the surrounding woods.

My freshman year was a never-ending succession of fire drills. The previous year, some mischief-makers had broken into the school and vandalized it, and their finishing touch had been to set off the sprinkler system. The resulting water damage had required a monumental restoration effort and incidentally screwed up the fire alarm wiring; it took a year before all the bugs were worked out of the system, during which the dang thing kept going off randomly. The fire department fairly quickly stopped responding, telling the school to just call them if it was real this time. The fire safety doors were propped open with chairs the entire year, since otherwise they’d lock and nobody could get to their classes at passing time.

Sounds fun, unless it’s raining out.

All day fire drill? That seems like a waste of time.

When I was in school in the 50s and 60s we had frequent bomb threats. We had to wait outside while the bomb squad searched the entire building. It sometimes took several hours. In the meantime we were made to stand in straight lines, often in freezing temperatures with no coats.

I know it’s a joke, but this makes no sense. Nobody has an all day fire drill. Heck, they normally won’t last more than 10 minutes.

Mmm, I have never heard of an all day fire drill… Maybe 20 minutes, but never all day…
