I wasn’t much older than Caulfield when I began to realize that what I really wanted wouldn’t work as a Christmas gift. And only a little older than that when I realized that what “my” adults said they wanted was more about making it feasible for the (grand)kids to get them something than it was about their own desires. Mom liked aprons and cooking tools. Dad liked something he could wear to church. (A tie). Grandma liked decorative turtles. These things were things they liked, but not like kids want Christmas presents.

Well, Caulfield, go ahead and write your list for Grandma. But be sure to give her lots of hugs for whatever she gives you, whether on the list or not. She is a treasure of information and lessons on life. Don’t ignore them.

Grandma can’t be clueless? Does she live with you day in and day out and talk with you on a daily basis? Or is she, like 99.9% of the grandmothers I’ve ever known, an adult with a home and a life of her own, often in a distant city?

Definitely worth a try. And not just for Caulfield either.

Caulfield, did you ask your grandma what she’d like for Christmas?
