Pocket Calculators were new in my first year of university. On the Enginering exams, we had to hand over the calculator and use slide-rule only. Anyone caught with a calculator failed the exam (and there were a few).
Along with the use of slide rules mentioned by some of my fellow fossils, there was also the joy of interpolating trig functions and logs from tables. Mind you, we had calculators and were allowed to use them, but there were some older teachers who felt it was really important to keep the old ways alive for some reason.
