Years back, my two friends, each with their own offspring, decided to get married. There were like 12 kids total. I was asked to babysit. I had permission to ground and permission to spank. First night, one boy refused to go to bed at his bedtime. Grounding did not help as he was already in his room. Spanking did not help as he just laughed. After a while in this standoff, the oldest boy in the other family said, “Pay me a dollar, and I’ll get him to go to bed.” “You’re on,” I replied. “Pay the dollar up front,” he said, so I did. He disappeared into the boys’ bedroom, and quickly the younger boy was quiet and went to sleep. “How did you do that?” I asked. “I told him if he’d go to bed, I’d give him a quarter,” was the reply.

I’ve had nightmare babysitting experiences as a teenager, including parents refusing to pay. I’ve also had wonderful experiences, like a 2 year old putting on my shoes so I couldn’t leave. :))

Not enough money, money, money in the world.

I had three younger brothers for whom I was responsible but not allowed to hit.

The only way I could deter their troublesome tendencies was to tell them funny stories.

Any time I start to doubt the wisdom of my particular childless, bachelor lifestyle, I go to some “family restaurant” and watch kids eat. OMG!
