Ones can be tricky they can be I’s or lower case l’s. Nines can sneak up and pretend to be a six.

And a 4 upside down pretends to be a chair.

Of course, the one without any limit at all, is an 8 on its side.

I even love the title page.

“Sally. Sally. Sitting up on a three.”

“She’s acting cleverer than U and M EEE.”

I feel the same way about 1s. It can be a 1, it can be a dash, it can be an underline. . . .at least the way most write it. Rarely do I ever see it drawn with the side hat and base.

When I was learning those symbols, I gave them personalities. I still see faces on all numbers and letters. Note: 2 is the only number that faces to the right, but — unlike 6 — is looking behind it. I usually draw 2’s as mad to the world so they don’t look like Z’s.

And this is why sorting out W’s at an M&M factory is such a hard job. Some might be E’s or 3’s as well.

Why does a number 6 look like a nose? And how can you tell there’s N’s in the M’s?

What I find interesting is that while we have dozens of different alphabets in the world, almost everyone uses those squiggles we call Arabic Numbers. They were most likely invented in India and propagated by Arab traders during the European siesta called the Dark Ages.

so it is true that you can manipulate numbers to mean whatever you want visually. also true that one can just stress a few of them over a few of the others, put them in a certain order, and conveniently leave out a couple and you have the “state of the union” and the “economic growth” governmental figures. Or even the “end of year” company report, “scientific” trends, and of course the IRS income tax percentages that will soon be haunting everyone. All definitely, numbers we have to deal with that aren’t as fun as yours Sally, but numbers are used that way whenever certain people try to convince other people of how good a “job” they’re doing. Or not doing.
