I actually attended a recruitment seminar for a UPS delivery person once, thinking about getting a job with them at the time (it didn’t work out though), during which they put heavy emphasis on how to handle the pet dogs of the people they delivered to, which I can mostly sum up as “don’t.”
Basically, the UPS guy is probably more leery of you than you are of him, Sophie, if not out of actual fear for his person but out of actual fear for his job.
My Sophie thinks the UPS, FedEx, and Amazon drivers are her boyfriends. She recognizes their engines’ sounds and shouts (barks) at them if they don’t stop to see her.
Getting dogs from the shelter always raises questions about their previous lives. Driver stepped out of his big brown truck and Alice raced toward him! Oh no. She jumped into the truck and stood there wagging her tail. Maybe a previous owner was a driver?
