Back in the day, I had a regular IT client who would leave me “call me” messages, with no clue as to why. I called her back once and said “what’s the problem?” and she said “I’ve just been diagnosed with breast cancer.” I said “I’m sorry. I can’t help with that. What’s the computer problem?”
A couple of decades ago I gave a homeless man a pair of boots. When I asked him if they fit and were comfortable he told me about how his dad used to close the piano on his hands if he made a mistake.. it was off topic but a very deep wound. I would never dismiss or belittle someone in such deep pain. Now he’s a peer councellor for former street addicts. I like to think I helped a bit.

I don’t think she’ll be leaving a very good tip either.

Some people seem to “thrive” on their own misery and anguish.

The only reason that’s disappointing is that you quit trying.

To borrow from the old “Hee Haw” song:
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

Don’t talk to her until she’s had her coffee.

That’s what he meant, Broomie. Now you’ve gone and depressed him and he’ll burn your food!
