Oh my. What a way to start the week. Something private, wondering what Goldie wants to talk about? The question of the week, donut conundrum not withstanding. That donut does look tasty though.

I too want a donut as big as my head. Where did you get that donut, Lupin?

(No, seriously, whose donut is that? Or was, I guess…)

No, it’s not time for donuts. Paczki Day is Tuesday.

I’m trying a new bakery and a new flavor, blueberry jam with lemon whipped cream, assuming I get there in time before they sell out.

Oh, right … Fat Tuesday is upon us? When we lived in Pennsylvania Dutch country, the locals called it ‘Fastnacht Day’, but I liked to called it Tubby Tuesday. Now I want a plate of hot fried dough!

Lupin can go try the donut and Goldie can have that talk with Puck privately. I wonder if the smol cats will also interfere.

I was required to share ALL my Otis Spunkmeyer Wild Blueberry Muffins with my Scruffy! How she could recognize the crackle of that particular plastic I’ll never know, but she’d be right at my feet giving me the, “you’re sharing, right?” glare as soon as I started opening one.

My husband’s uncle drove to Hamtramck every Fat Tuesday at 5am to bring us boxes of Paczki. Unfortunately, that tradition passed with him, but the bakery does supply a lot of area stores and fortunately, one near us orders from them so I can still get authentic, traditional Paczki. Nothing like them, and I’ve tried a lot of them.

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Puckmosis: That was a wonderful breakfast. Especially the Donut Day donuts.

Beatrixia: Too bad Lupin’s not here. You know how he loves donuts.

Floofnet the Joyous: Patrice and I will have some to take back with you on your return trip.

Puck: Thanks, that would be great. Now we’ll get Kara and Vann ready for our trip to Afar.

Sometime Later, at the Afar Public Library and Coffee Shop

Ishaq, the Cat in the Unusual Headgear: Hello, Bev. Good to see you again.

Librarian Beaver Lee Cleary: And you, as well Ishaq. Come to see the newest discovery?

Ishaq: Yes. Beatrixia and I are very interested in the Erma Bombosis first editions.

Beatrixia: Do you have If Life is a Bowl of Plums, Why Do I Always Get the Prunes?

Beverly: Yes, and Erma B’s Scroll on How to Survive a Week of Mondays.

Ishaq: My favorite is her philosophy book Eat Less Cottage Cheese and Eat More Ice Cream.

Bea: There’s a world of wisdom in that scroll.

Violet-Ifa: That’s what got me interested in studying cheese taking.

Mmmm, donuts. So good to eat and yet so bad for you. In St. Louis, there is a donut shop that makes a donut with bacon on it! I have never had it because my heart would stop at the first bite. However, those younger and in better shape say they are good.

Marie and I make biscuits every Sunday morning. Marie has her’s with Irish butter. I have my two weekly biscuits with Bonne Maman Blackberry Preserves, an excellent accompaniment from France.

Oh my Cat it’s BEAR SIGN!

For those who don’t know, that phrase comes from chuck wagon days. If the cook made donuts (fried), any bear in the area would be attracted.

When my first fur baby, Katie Kat, was a baby, I sat at the kitchen table one day with a book in one hand and a large glazed donut in the other. Suddenly there was a big tug on the donut— that tiny kitten had silently made her way onto the table and attacked the sugar bomb. I allowed her a few bites since she’d worked so hard to get there. Still not sure I believe cats can’t taste sweet things—they seem so attracted to them, and not just soft/creamy ones.

It’s late so I’ll post this again tomorrow, but after a few warmer days the peep toads have made their first appearance this evening. It will be a short one, as we’re supposed to get colder temps and a little snow by tomorrow morning, but they will be in and out until the weather decides to stay warm.

May I just take a moment to thank everyone here for being (for lack of a better word) extremely normal? I follow many comics online, some of which I followed for years in the paper (until the Great Contraction of Local Papers) before switching, and at first I was delighted that I could interact with other readers, some of whom had a similar long history with those strips. But no more. Almost every other comment section on this and other comic sites is full of “featured commentators” or “top commentators” who just suck the joy out of every single strip. But I’ve never seen that here. We speak of love and joy and sorrow and fear and hope and loss…but never try to ruin the strip for others. Sometimes there’s a complaint about an arc that is going on a little long, or the lack of storyline containing a favorite character, but this group treats those things as transient issues, and almost never tries to quash another reader’s enjoyment. I’m sure I’ve missed somebody announcing their departure (loudly or sotto voce) due to irreconcilable differences, but I really don’t remember seeing the acrimony I notice in other groups. So I’d like to raise my glass to all here, and to Georgia for attracting such a nice and interesting clan.
