Brutus was spot on today. I miss those 5 and 10 cents stores. 7 cents tax on a dollar now. When 7 cents once got a kid candy/gum for a week plus. Penny a day. 3 pieces of gum or candy for a penny back in the 1940/50’s. Tax started late 50’s. Kids would keep all their spending under 10 cents at a time to keep from losing a penny. Our single store owner Mr. Britt would not charge kids any tax. I remember him well to this day. RIP Sir. 76 people in our small little town of McDonald, NC. Farming community. Good people then and now.
So to confirm this, in America two bits is a quarter, so a Fifty-cent store would be what we’d call a Four-bit Store and a Dollar Store would be an Eight-bit Store.
Likewise in computer language, a Byte is 8 bits, so a Dollar Store would also be called a Byte Store?
It’s all relevant.. those 5 & 10 stores worked when 50 cents an hour or $2.00 a day were good wages. Sure you could get 5 bags of chips for an hours work.. guessing you could get about the same (if not more) for an hours wages today.
That reminds me of the famous quote by Woody Hayes from the 1968 OSU vs Michigan football game. The Buckeyes scored to go up 50 to 14 and Woody tried for a two point conversion. The reporters asked him why he tried for a two point conversion when he was up by so much and Woody said it was because he couldn’t go for three.
50 cents more than I would have spent. You could never please her even if you spent $1000. So as the old Ricky Nelson song says, “You can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself”. Happy Mother-in-law’s Birthday to you my friend…..
I am shocked he not only remembered, but actually got her a gift! I would have assumed he left that up to Gladys to handle. See, he will be the sad one when the old witch dies!

While there he should check out their “Dented Can” section, and might as well spring for a manual can opener. It is her special day and all.

I wonder how much rat poison you can get for $1.00? ;D

I recently bought some clamps for potato chip bags at Dollarama (Canada’s answer to the Dollar Tree). She can use them to clamp her mouth shut.

Well, that leaves out the 5 and Dime Stores.

Brutus, have you ever thought about re-gifting?

In the “old days”, the “dollar store” was known as the “dime store”.

Brutus, nothing is too good for Mother Gargle and that’s exactly what you should give her. Nothing.

How much are things at the dollar store? Dollar Tree is now charging $1.25. They’re also adding merchandise over that.

Hardly anything at the “dollar” store costs a dollar any longer

It is probably in bad taste to suggest a plane ticket to Switzerland and a short stay in with a on-profit org over there.
