It frees up a lot of time that he has no clue what to do with… and he uses it to watch public broadcasting… I used to read a book while watching F1, watching the screen only if it sounded like something was going on. Then, I took off the sound because it was annoying to listen to all that nonsensical babbling. Then, I found out that F1 has a YouTube channel with the selected scenes, less than 10 minutes with all the action and I could read a book outside where it’s a lot nicer than in front of the TV. Then I started to forget to check the F1 calendar and missed most of them. Then I cancelled the streaming subscription that included F1… It felt like a 12 steps program :D
You know Harlequin romance novels? In Sweden, they’re always condensed. You never get the full novel translated, because they cut away pretty much everything that isn’t dialogue, plot or the most necessary description only. Some people wonder why romance doesn’t get respect. Me, I wonder why romance readers accept this kind of thing.
I usually wait an hour for hockey and football. Skipping commercials and intermissions / halftime I typically finish a hockey game in pretty darned close to the actual hour of play, but football takes a little longer.

Gee, I’m retired and I don’t have that kind of spare time. Actually, I don’t have any spare time.

We used to do that with hour long TV shows. Give them about 20 minutes, then fast forward through the ads and catch up by the end.
