The Tingler (1959), a clever tale about the nature of fear, had “Percepto,” in which electric buzzers were wired under selected patrons’ seats; star Price instructed the audience from the screen that they had to scream if the parasitic Tingler was to be destroyed.
Already been done in Kentucky Fried Movie, "The sketch “See You Next Wednesday” mocks theater-based gimmicks like Sensurround by depicting a dramatic film presented in “Feel-a-Round”, which involves an usher physically accosting a theater patron."
Smell-o-vision was a big fail. Each individual scent came out but failed to dissipate before the next smell arrived. Thus all the scents combined and assaulted theater patrons noses.
Various efforts to spray scent products in theaters go back to the mid-1800s, and it was seriously attempted in the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s. These efforts all ended in failure and so were eventually abandoned.
