I believe there has been at least one study that showed eating off smaller plates helps to lose weight.

This arc is peculiar to me. Our inherited “good china” purchased for a bride in 1927 has dining plates exactly the same circumference as the dining plates in the stoneware we bought in 2022. The “salad plates” are smaller, and the soup bowls are smaller (the china has handled soup and bowls and regular soup bowls) but that’s because modern soup bowls are intended for soup as a meal, not a first course.

In the days before 1/4lb hamburgers and “Super-Size” became the standard size, today’s burger from the dollar menu was the standard size meal. The funny part is that whenever I see someone order those little burgers, they almost always order two for themselves. Some years ago, a friend visiting from Sweden, and I stopped at a Wendy’s for lunch. She was absolutely appalled at the guy at the next table devouring a triple decked burger. She then asked me what average American lifespan was. I told her I didn’t know but I was pretty sure it’s not as long as it was last year. Bring on the big plates!

My mother’s father ate off of Army surplus mess trays and the food never touched. If you wanted butter, you passed him your knife and he cut off your allocation. A bit strange.

… and with bigger plates you can eat twice as much food that doesn’t touch.

I like using my smaller plates for spaghetti and pizza. It keeps me from putting too much on my plate and overeating.

Betty’s reply is hilarious! “Sure, let’s go with that” meaning, we all know you like to eat Alex! Pile it on!
