Proactive? Is that the right word? Maybe. I guess she means they ought to attack the stuff directly rather than wait for it to shrink naturally by never adding to it. However, I like Arlo’s solution. In fact, I think I’ll start using it myself.
Janis seems to be in her “NESTING” phase. Even though she is not pregnant, my wife says a lot of women go through “NESTING PHASE…” Men just get out of the way.
It seems that whenever we take stuff to our local charity store we end up buying more junk, some of which ends up back at the store. I should give them checks and cut out the middleman.
My partner and I made a deal that in addition to clearing out old stuff in general, nothing new could come into the house without something old going out. It worked, but it took a while.
I’m trying to downsize for an eventual move to a smaller place. My husband keeps buying stuff he doesn’t need, without telling me. A package will show up that he ordered. I really hope I die first and he has to deal with all his junk.
Charity thrift stores would love to have many of those items donated. If you need to replace them at some point, you can always go to a charity thrift store. :)

I started decluttering four years before our move. Should have made it five years before.

New Year’s resolution 2023: Clean the junk out of the basement.
New Year’s resolution 2024: Clean the junk out of the basement.
It’s nice to know that I won’t have to think up a resolution for the next few years.

One has to be non-emotional about this.

Proactive, eh? Hmmm…Janis, I think that means you will no longer be allowed to do online shopping. Are you sure you’re ready to be so “proactive”?

My wife just ordered a drafting table. I have no idea where she plans to put it. Last week, it was another set of shelves for the bedroom.

Wife is going through that process at the moment. It’s taking forever. She rejected my method……backing up the dumpster.

For years now I have stopped my wife from buying things by asking where are you going to put it? and what are you going to get rid of to put it there?

Churches are about to begin their garage sale season. Box up everything, jam the garage full or erven rent a storage and haul it to them.

Prairie Home Companion had a great skit about cleaning out the attic. “When’s the last time you drove this Edsel? Vrooom Crash!”

Speaking from experience, I know what she means about not scratching the surface. Get a dumpster and fill it. Have it emptied. Repeat.

Why isn’t Janis handing the box to Arlo? He can dispose of it properly.
