This isn’t about political correctness. Yes, pc talk was invented in the late 80s, but it was mostly about identity politics. Mr. Dipthong is a victim of an earlier, parallel tradition governing public talk about sex, homosexuality in particular.

AIDS helped to advance the cause of gay rights by making it necessary to talk about stuff that people had for centuries hoped to make go away by not talking about it.

We ALL have the same rights as “everybody else”. Just a different slant on things.

Poor Armand…he looks awful. Maybe he would be allowed to enlist a co-writer this one time to teach him a bit?

A little bit later, during the early 90s, “Stormin Norman” Schwarzkopf would refer to it, in a press conference, as “Bovine Scatology”…

Gee whiz, I took 10th grade health class around the time this strip came out, and we talked about the transmission of AIDS and safe sex frankly, complete with anatomically correct words and diagrams.
