My 8-year-old daughter is a huge Beatles/Sir Paul fan, and recently discovered Stevie Wonder. I showed her the video for “Ebony & Ivory” and she almost exploded! (if there is an existing clip of Paul with Elvis she would DEFINITELY explode)
Unfortunately the idea of “white pride” has been co-opted by unsavory people who have been known to kill, hurt, and harass non white people. There’s a negative connotation to it now.
To the whimpering right-wingers: The reason that a “white people only” magazine isn’t progressive is that there have been exclusively or almost exclusively white people magazines for 200 years or so. If you have ever been oppressed, shunned or undermined, it has been by your fellow whites.
LOL. “Progressive” means embracing ignorance, bigotry, and racial discrimination. It means using violence to force all people to live however the “progressives” think people should live. It means hatred for the intellect, for any mind that DARES to think outside the “progressive” box.
No, it isn’t redundant. (I’m also specifically talking about the KKK when I refer to unsavory types.) To be proud of being white isn’t shameful in itself any more than someone who is proud of being hispanic/latino/asian/black/etc. mrssaskfan is right though in that whites have been widely represented in culture/media/government/etc., whereas nonwhites have not – thus the creation of Ebony.
White is actually something of an artifical construct, which, in the historical US at least, gave a particular legal set of rights. Some immigrant groups, such as Italians, were not originally considered white, but were legally changed to that status later on. I still remember being told about an Italian child who was, along with her grandmother, forced to ride in the “colored” car of a train. If they were fairer skinned, that probably would not have happened. (Please note, of course, that I don’t think that should have happened to anybody, certainly not the African Americans on the train.) As for Breathed, this cartoon takes me aback somewhat. Clearly he never experienced the “white power” magazines that were prevalent in the late ’70’s and early ’80’s, and which actually used to be slipped into customer’s bags at a record store I once had the misfortune to patronize.

If you’re ever in Iowa City, IA, be sure to visit Prairie Lights. It’s a great independent book store. 8-)

The progressive movement’s favorite phrase…“…but it’s not fairrrrr…” Funny, I never was promised ‘fair’ when I was born.
