Life ceased regular production at the end of 1972. They continued for a while with some special issues, such as an annual year-in-pictures. There was no August 1973 issue.
fwiw: I and a few others are memorialized in an article printed in the New York Times, summer 2000 covering an art related subject. Two more papers followed up and printed it as well with a more local spin. That was interesting. I have copies.
So Hammy time-travels on nearly a monthly basis, and no one here is buying that he might have dropped R.J. off in 1973 for a while? (Here’s why this scenario is plausible: The Twinkies would have been fresh back in 1973—R.J. had to try them.)

Ah, the 70s! It was a different time.

I’ve attributed RJ’s preternatural lifespan to his Twinkie diet. Since Twinkies were invented in 1930, he could have been around in ’76.

I must say, all those preservatives in RJ’s twinkle diet are really working some serious overtime!
