I used to see Chapin live about once a year. Then one day, Chapin was on the radio. I changed the station, and Chapin was on all of my favourite stations. It was a sad day. I was driving on the same road he died on , just a short time before.
Me, too! We were going to see him at Salisbury Park that night. (Eisenhower Park later). I grew up in East Meadow. He was in a fatal car crash on the Long Island Expressway. It was a very sad day indeed.
I loved this song when I was a kid and didn’t understand that it was about parental guilt of ignoring your children. Today I can’t listen to it. It causes me overwhelming grief and sadness. It makes me feel like I’m an even worse father than I really was when my kids were little.
My mom had just come to visit. My husband called from work to tell me he had heard on the radio. Mom had to go home early for the family funeral. He lived just down the road and Mom and her husband were good friends. I babysat Josh and Jenny and taught Jase to swim. and in return Harry taught me Cat’s in the Cradle and Shooting Star. I couldn’t listen to his records for years. It hurt too much.

I loved this song when it first came out. Such a sad, but true song.

His wife wrote it as a poem and he loved it so much he turned it into a song. It still hits you in gut when you hear it. At least it does me.

Kind of off topic. The song ♪Honey♪ by Bobby Goldsboro. I had to sing it to my mom and sister so they could hear the words.
