I had a reading list in elementry school and we had to pick three to four books to read over the summer vacation. I love to read, and when the weather was to hot or raining, I would read.
I remember the summer I was 15 and worked in the basket room at the local pool – busy busy busy at 1 pm and at 5:30, very little to do in between. I read War and Peace and Gone With The Wind that summer.
As a children’s librarian I always loathed the fact that teachers gave obligatory reading lists to kids for summer vacation. We tried so hard to encourage reading for pleasure and the schools were turning it into yet another homework obligation during vacation time.
I don’t remember ever having a read list for summer in school, of course I have loved reading since I was able to read, Mom read to us before bed until we learned to read then we would read the books to her to practice. Me and my sister would spend our summers at the library reading and taking home books to read. I do remember that my 11th grade English teacher would put out books on the shelves of the chalkboards that we could borrow if we wanted to and then return them to him when done, and he would put our John Steinbeck, Shakespeare, Jane Austin and such. I read all but a couple thorught the year and asked him if I could read the rest during my senior year and he allowed me to, he said it was great to not only see someone who loved to read but someone who loved the classics.

The teacher said “Here is what you have to read”. Technicalities are everything… in laziness.

I thought school was out for the summer. Why does he still have to do what the teacher tells him to?

I never got a reading list from a teacher. Our library had a recommended list. Is the one the school gives required or recommended?

Peter never got the FUN part of “Reading is fundamental”. He did get the MENTAL part, though! ;-P

If you had to read something over the summer, it meant you had to write a report on it in the fall

I don’t recall reading lists per se but I did enjoy reading, always liked mysteries. ‘The Three Investigators’ was my favorite series.

Maybe Peter is the one suited for a law career. He needs to start on that reading list first.
