One hospital had to conceal information from psychologists to prevent them from stealing patients from each other. There are HIPAA laws, but a psychiatrist qualifies as a doctor.
“The social psychologist Jonathan Haidt notes in his new book, ‘The Anxious Generation’ that there is a striking correlation between the birth of social media and the iPhone around 10 to 15 years ago and a long list of psychological and social pathologies among adolescents, from sleep deprivation to suicide.” (Bret Stephens)
Through coming generations, the tech-savvy but addled will be needing psychologists more and more while those in the “handy” trades like plumbing will be able to name their price.
I can’t remember the comedian who told the joke but it was the IRS was investigating John Gotti because his income was Five million dollars and his occupation was listed as a plumber. They dropped it when they realized that is what plumbers make.
When was the last time you heard of a poor plumber, electrician, etc.?Yet schools push hard for students to go to college and avoid the vocational trades.
We have class distinctions in the US. We just don’t always acknowledge them. Plumbers, farmers, so-called blue-collar workers seem to look down on people with office jobs, assuming they ‘just sit around all day, they don’t really work’. [People with office jobs may snub blue-collar workers for being less educated.]
When my kids were in school, I volunteered a lot at the school with Helen, the wife of a local plumber. I was an operations research analyst. She and I got along fine, but her husband, Rob, seemed to have a problem with me. Not exactly a chip on his shoulder, but more a dismissive attitude — the ‘what-do-you-know, you’re just a college-grad and you’ve always had it easy’ attitude. One evening when I arrived at their house for a meeting, Helen was still putting the kids to bed. So I sat in the living room with Rob and tried to make conversation.
After a couple of his put-downs, I got fed up and told him that yes, I did have some things easier because my folks insisted on me going to college. They had saved money to help me pay for it, I held summer jobs and got two scholarships, so I didn’t go into debt getting my education. And, after a couple of false starts, I found a career that I enjoyed. I had a monthly salary, health benefits and a retirement plan. Our house [which he knew] and our two family cars were all the property we ‘owned’. He and his brother owned their own business and, along with house we were sitting in, he also had a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks with a fancy boat and a cabin in the Rockies where they went skiing every winter [they also owned rental properties around town, but that was never talked about]. My family had none of that. Our salaries went towards our kids’ education and activities and our home mortgage. Vacations were spent visiting relatives. We had different priorities, different interests. Different; not better or worse.
Let this be a lesson to all you college bound teens worrying about financing your education. Try plumbing, instead. On the job training and pay. Followed by great pay and no college necessary. Or, at most a tech school certificate.

All Lucy needed was a ‘little’ incentive. Problem solved.

The last panel shows he’s not a real plumber, no crack showing. (I know it’s a CLICHÉ but I figured someone would say it). ;-}
