Getting to be way too bothersome to shop any more. Even the grocery store requires an account and an order form before one can just check prices online.
The apps that allow you to select the tip amount shortchanges the server in my case. I tip 20% rounded up and in some cases even more. I have a son who used to work as a server, and I know how often servers get “stiffed” and I can afford it.
If the service is particularly good or bad, I will have a discussion with the manager. I also vote with my feet.
I always hate it when I run my card and it the cashier says it is going to ask me a question. I do not tip in those situations. Nowadays in order to get ANY kind of help, most fast foods, pizza joints, etc. are offering twice the minimum wage. Those who work for tips are paid about 1/2 of minimum wage and make it up in tips. Most good wait staff prefer it that way. They make way more than they would at minimum wage.
I saw a funny video, guy in airport and as he goes through security, his bag gets searched. When the agent completes the search, he holds out his phone with the tip screen showing.
I’m not going to tip via an app. I carry cash for that express purpose. I am never going to donate via an app, download a food franchise app, or come back to a place that keeps forcing these options on me.
As a hospitality professional, for many years, I don’t agree with the whole practice. I refuse to tip someone for putting food in a bag or preparing my meal. That’s their job, and what they were hired for. Subway asks you to put the tip in before they provide the details. So for handing a bag out a window you deserve a tip, I don’t think so.
I don’t use the “suggested” tip at all. It’s always zero for me. I leave what I think is an appropriate amount in cash on the table. I have a lot of empathy for waitresses since my daughter used to be one. I even got chewed out for leaving too much of a tip while out of town on company business. She is no longer a waitress, but a registered nurse for the last few years. Waitressing was just starting out, learning good work ethics and learning how to take care of people which translated nicely for taking care of people who aren’t at their very best.

Tips are just a hidden tax that cheap employers use to justify paying their workers less than a living wage. They should be illegal.

I’ve become moderately angry with this scenario, I’ve accidentally selected 20% and had left a cash tip too.

It’s hard to get out of a lot of places now without playing 20 questions at the register.
