Pets or children or even adults…. VIDEOTAPE them, then take the best screenshots. Way more dependable than single shots. (Video is now clear enough to do this. It didn’t used to be.)
Advice from a guy who takes a lot of pet pictures: Always take the picture of your cute cat or dog immediately. Don’t set it up — point camera and push button. You can try to get the best angle, lighting, whatever after you take that first picture. At least you have something when your furry friend stops doing the adorable thing.
Yesterday our therapy dogs had to get their pictures taken for new badges. The golden retriever jumped up on the seat of the chair and kept changing her pose. She does pose for pictures. It took quite a while for the person taking the picture to get one that showed a good angle. Then came my deaf beagle. I had a sheet with me, put it over me, sat down, held onto my dog, and she smiled happily up at the camera person. We humans then pretend argued about which dog did better. Her dog poses, mine got a good picture much quicker. We had time to joke about it while we had to walk all the way back to my car to put the sheet in it, since we can’t do dog therapy with a bag with a sheet in it. The two dogs are my avatar.

My cats do this all the time. I’ll catch them being adorable but by the time I get my phone ready to snap a picture, they move!

Every time my dog sees me point my phone at him, he runs over to me. I wonder what he thinks is going on.

Dogs do the move just as you click thing as well. At least mine does. Lots of great photo ops, very few good pics.

The cat knew he was going to do that and changed positions on purpose.

This is why I now have a camera with “burst mode”. It can “go back in time” up to 30 seconds, if you were pointing it at the cat.

Cats: you gotta love them! Seriously, you are required to love them if you know what is good for you.
