Whenever I’m dealing with someone whose native language isn’t English, I keep in mind Nelson Mandela’s observation that “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” So I greet them in their own language if I can. I figure that if I pronounce it well, it provides gratification, and if not, amusement. Either way, it provides some comfort for a stranger in a strange land.

Basically the opposite of Ernest Hemingway, who allegedly hated bad books for sucking and good bucks for eliciting his jealousy.
